About Us
Jess and Jenny are part of The Lived Experience Student Consultants program - an initiative under Respectful Communities/Respect at Uni.
These student consultants use their lived experience to offer valuable insights to inform the University of Newcastle’s strategy and actions to prevent gender-based violence
Jenny’s interest is surrounding sexual and gender-based violence with a focus on historic abuse. She is dedicated to advancing resources and support to victims of childhood and domestic abuse with a keen interest in research on supporting recovery, justice and judicial decision making.
Jess engages in advocacy around policy reforms and trauma-informed training in the coercive control space, focusing on disability and LGBTIQA+ perspectives. She is dedicated to amplifying victim-survivor voices within the criminal justice system and is passionate about raising awareness of the traumatic effects of childhood sexual violence. She is committed to incorporating more support towards the healing process through education and training initiatives in the gender-based violence space.
As lived experience experts, Jess and Jenny are available to collaborate with university staff and stakeholders to offer insights and feedback from lived experience perspectives on issues related to respect, consent, and safety on campus. This may include:
- Feedback on existing policies, programs, research and initiatives to ensure they are survivor-centred and trauma-informed.
- Assisting in creating educational materials and resources that reflect the realities and needs of students with lived experiences.
- Engaging in outreach activities to promote understanding and support for survivors among the student body and university staff.
- Participating in the evaluation of respect and consent initiatives, providing feedback to enhance their effectiveness and inclusivity.
By informing and guiding the development, implementation, and evaluation of University initiatives and activities, Jenny and Jess play a crucial part in the University’s approach and outcomes.

Respect at Uni Lived Experience Student Consultants
Hi everyone,
Please support student survivors of gender-based violence through the University of Newcastle’s Gifting Day.
Gender-based violence is a social problem of epidemic proportions across Australia, Newcastle and the Hunter region. It is having a devastating effect on the well-being of families and communities that can be felt for years.
Higher education has been shown to play a significant role in alleviating the impacts of gender-based violence.
But the reality is, victim-survivors face substantial challenges in accessing and participating in higher education, including profound economic hardship as a direct result of gender-based violence.
Your support today can ensure that student victim-survivors can fully participate and thrive in higher education.
Through the Gender Justice Hub based at the University of Newcastle, one-on-one support is provided to student victim-survivors; a program informed by the experiences of people who have been personally impacted.
Your donation will enable this one-on-one support: a relational navigator to walk alongside victim-survivors throughout their educational journeys to ensure access to quality services and resources that enable them to thrive in their degrees and beyond.
Your generosity will not only help someone today, but it will also enable them to support others who share similar experiences.
“Education itself provides the freedom, focus and escape to a better future for women and children.”
All donations of $2 or more are tax-deductible and 100 percent of your generous gift will provide vital support and services for students who have experienced gender-based violence to complete their higher education, helping to break the cycle of abuse in our communities..1
Thank you so much for your kindness to shape a better tomorrow for people in our communities and the world.
1.Donations of $2 or more are tax deductible in Australia. The University of Newcastle covers all administration costs so that 100% of all funds raised goes directly to the cause supported.
