Johanna is a big thinker and talented artist. But she went through school with undiagnosed dyslexia and ADHD. With few resources or opportunities available to overcome her learning challenges, Johanna said she felt “like I was hitting my head against a brick wall.”
Johanna was working in retail and feeling lost when she heard that the University of Newcastle offered free pathway programs to help people access higher education.
The course helped Johanna realise that her determination was a huge asset when it came to learning. She went to every tutorial and sought out in-person support from her tutors.
She’d sit up until 3am some nights in the computer labs, writing and rewriting her essays. Other nights, she’d be working graveyard shifts as a cleaner or petrol attendant to pay her rent.
Johanna decided she wanted to make a difference as a teacher, and started a Bachelor of Education (Secondary). But as university got more difficult, her own learning barriers persisted.
It was thanks to a Shaping Futures Student Support Grant from our generous community that Johanna could finally get the medical help she needed.
It was a major turning point for her life, allowing her to break through her learning barriers, succeed at university and start her dream job teaching art in a high school.
As the cost-of-living crisis deepens, a growing number of students with the ability to succeed risk being forced out of university by financial pressures.
