HunterWiSE
Hunter Women in STEM Network
Research shows that over the course of high school, female students in Australia come to believe that careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) are not for them.1
HunterWiSE, developed at the University of Newcastle, aims to shift these beliefs, using a unique and effective mentoring model to inspire and foster confidence in young women.
Created by leading female STEM educators and researchers, HunterWISE encourages girls in Year 8 to have hands-on experiences and get excited about a STEM career, ultimately inspiring our female STEM leaders of tomorrow.
Students from the University of Newcastle undertaking a STEM undergraduate degree or doctoral studies visit schools in the Hunter and surrounding regions to support their younger counterparts in designing STEM solutions for real-world problems they identify in their local community.
Diverse representation in all fields of work is incredibly important: it prevents unconscious bias in services delivered and products created, and narrows gender pay gaps. Today, in the STEM disciplines, women remain vastly outnumbered by men. To overcome this disparity, we need to intervene in the early years of high school – and we need to do that now.
HunterWiSE has proven that its unique peer-to-peer mentoring model works, and your generous tax-deductible donation will support the progress towards gender equity in STEM. Your donation will ensure that this framework can support even more young women and motivate them to become our STEM leaders and role models of the future.
Your donation will support HunterWiSE
