In honour of Thelma Wright

Friends of the University Thelma Wright Memorial Nursing and Midwifery Scholarship

This memorial scholarship was set up in remembrance of Thelma McLeod. She was born in 1931; the 2nd youngest in a family of seven children. She grew up in the district around Casino.

Money was scarce and times were difficult. Thelma left school at the age of 14, never having completed her intermediate school certificate, girls were not expected to get an education, just get a job. Thelma worked in many jobs before being accepted into Nursing at Balmain, not a mean feat.

Unfortunately, her career in nursing was cut short when she contracted Tuberculosis, from the Hospital cook. This was devastating for her. She married, became a mother of 5 and became an active member of the Newcastle community.

Thelma would be delighted to know that there are people out there benefiting from a scholarship. Thelma was only too aware of the struggles to sustain a living while studying, having come from an impoverished background with very little education.
